Board Meeting KHCPL Downtown

February 10, 2009

Attending:  Marilyn Craig, Carol Gaskill, Kathy Rasmusssen, Janet Flowers, Betty Shackelford, Debbie McFall, Ann Abel, Diane Poisson, and Tanya Davis.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm by president, Marilyn Craig.

Vicki Pignatelli’s workshop is 10:00 to 4:00 on February 24th. Since the weather may not cooperate, each attendee will pay at Vicki at the workshop.  Debbie McFall will arrange lodging for her at the Marriot on South 31.  Debbie will also be reserving the room at the Civic Center that has the most electrical outlets for the workshop.

The current time of 6-9:00 seems to rush our meetings.  After discussion, it was decided to try to schedule with the Civic Center from 6:30-9:30.

Betty Shackelford stated that the sign-ups for the Winter Woolen Workshop went pretty well with most all the positions covered but the clean-up.  Betty also stated that Marguerite Wiebaush will help with the Bed Turning at the show.

Marilyn thanked Diane Poisson and Ann Abel for all their hard work.  Marilyn also mentioned that Jo-Ann Fabrics would be interested in presenting our information.  Marilyn will get back to Jo-Ann about this opportunity.

Ann Abel had been contacted by Primrose Retirement Centerfor aide in making a blanket.  The request was unclear; therefore, Ann will gather more information to determine if we are interested in participating.

Ann Abel announced 88 paid members. This number is larger than normal this early in the year.

The silent auction was once again discussed.  It was again stated that the items should be of new or nearly new quality, and that all proceeds for the donated items belong to the guild.

The deadline for entries for antique quilts is the end of February, and the deadline for all other entries is at the March meeting.

Discussion then turned to the description of the Challenge quilt.  It was decided that 75% of the quilt must be the log cabin.  This description will allow a border be placed around the log cabin center.  The outer measurement, circumference or perimeter, must not exceed 84 inches.

The meeting was dismissed at 8:00 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Janet Flowers, Secretary

Quilt Guild Meeting

January 27, 2009

Marilyn Craig, president, called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Marilyn read a thank you note from the VA for our 2008 service project quilts.

The minutes for November and December were read.                                                Sec. Report

The treasurer reported a balance of $1,253.38.                                                          Tres. Report

The following announcements were given.

  1. The Wilcox sisters’ quilt shop, “Little Scrap Quilt Shop”, will probably open later this year.
  2. The Winter Woolen Workshop will be held at the Elliot House February 28th and March 1st.  There will be demonstrations and workshops on many aspects of needlework.  There is a $6.00 admission charge which goes to the Howard County Historical Society.
  3. The quilt guild now has an ad-board.  You may place your ads on a 3x5 card and it will be pinned to the board.  The board will be on display at each meeting.  This method of advertizing was instituted to create more room in the newsletter.
  4. In order to meet the needs of our growing presence and activities, the administrative board has created the position of community relations coordinator.  The responsibilities would include being the contact person for the guild, organizing the logistics and volunteers for the events, plus overseeing the event. In 2008, such events were the Winter Woolen Workshop, the Farmer’s Market, and the Mini-Show at Greentree Assisted Living.  Anyone interested in volunteering for this position needs to contact Marilyn Craig
  5. Carol Gaskill announced the February and March workshops and that sign-ups were being taken.
  6. Margie McFarland asked for volunteers to complete the Disappearing Nine Patch and the blocks for the Susan B. Korman auction.

Debbie Smith presented the Block-of-the-Month project for this year.  This year’s project is a Seminole Strip Sampler.   She gave fabric suggestions and cautions for completing the sampler and its first strip.  There is a one time $1.00 copying fee for the sampler; however, in the spirit of true Block-of-the-Month programs, if you can’t complete a month’s strip, you will be charged another $1.00.                                                                                                           BOM

Margie McFarland announced that the Chicago Quilt Show trip was being planned for April 18, 2009.  A larger bus has been reserved, and the cost for the bus is $35.00.  The bus will leave the Wal-Mart parking lot at 6:45am and return about 11:00 pm.  This would include a supper stop in Merrillville.  Food is available at the show or you may take your lunch.  Extra money will be needed for the $10.00 admission to the show, for purchases made at the vendor booths, and for an evening meal in Merrillville. You must get registered and paid by the end of February.                                                                                                                     Spring Trip

                                                                                                                                            Program

Ann Abel presented the program.  She showed samples of the items that are needed as donations for the guild table during the show.  All the instructions are in a booklet available for $1.00 to cover copying cost.  She said the totes are back for $15.00, and the pins will be available starting in April for $5.00.  She requested a volunteer to assist with the guild table.  She reminded everyone that nice quality items are needed for the guild table and the silent auction.

We had show and tell.

We dismissed at 8:30 so members had time to view the guild table projects that Ann had presented or to continue shopping at the Little Scrap Quilt Shop tables.
